UK Flight Chaos: ATC Boss Faces Transport Secretary Amid Mass Cancellations

Air traffic control in the UK has been plunged into chaos, leading to over 1,000 flight cancellations on Tuesday and causing significant disruption for tens of thousands of passengers. The widespread issues stemmed from a technical problem experienced by Nats, the national air traffic control provider.

The knock-on effects of the initial outage are expected to continue well into Wednesday, with airlines grappling with widespread delays and further cancellations at major hubs like Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, and Stansted.

Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates as the system slowly recovers.

Martin Rolfe, the chief executive officer of Nats, is scheduled to meet with the Transport Secretary on Wednesday to discuss the incident. Rolfe stated he "always accepts full responsibility" for the critical infrastructure he oversees, emphasizing his immediate focus is on resolving the issue, ensuring safety, and getting services back to normal for airlines and the travelling public.

The disruption has drawn sharp criticism from airlines.

Ryanair reported that over 65,000 of its passengers were affected, leading to the cancellation of more than 50 scheduled flights. British Airways also confirmed forced cancellations.

Both Ryanair and Wizz Air have called for urgent action, with Ryanair specifically demanding the resignation of the Nats chief and Wizz Air advocating for significant reforms within the National Air Traffic Services. Travel journalist Simon Calder warned that Wednesday's continued disruption would be "horrible," particularly affecting incoming flights to Heathrow due to earlier cancellations.
