Delhi Police on Sunday arrested the driver and the conductor of a private sleeper bus in connection with an alleged rape inside the vehicle in Nangloi, West Delhi, about three days ago. The woman, a 30-year-old mother of four, had boarded the bus late at night and had reached near Saraswati Vihar when the incident allegedly occurred. The bus reportedly had curtains drawn over the windows, and the woman said she boarded the vehicle after helping her brother and was headed toward Madhuban Chowk when the accused allegedly drove to a secluded area in Nangloi, roughly 7 kilometres from where she was picked up. The accused have been identified as Umesh, a resident of Agra, and Ramendra, from Hathras in Uttar Pradesh, both of whom police say have been driving in Delhi for five to six years and took turns behind the wheel that night. Investigators are examining the sequence of events and whether the crime occurred inside a moving bus, as the suspects claim the matter involved a monetary dispute. The police are looking into all angles as part of the ongoing investigation.
The woman reportedly said that an argument over money led to the confrontation. She first used Umesh’s phone to contact Ramendra for money; when he refused, she used the phone to alert the police. Delhi Police have stated that they are investigating the case and have not confirmed that the assault occurred in a moving vehicle, emphasizing that the matter is under review. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has written to police, urging strict action against the culprits and a thorough investigation to address safety concerns for women in public transport.
Authorities say CCTV footage and statements from witnesses are being examined, and additional evidence is being collected to establish the sequence of events on the night in question. The victim, who lives with her family in a slum cluster near outer Delhi, has received interim support while investigators pursue leads. This case has heightened scrutiny on private sleeper buses operating in the capital and renewed calls for safer transport options for women travelers at night.
