Shein's Mega IPO Hits Hong Kong! What's Its True Value?
Fast fashion giant Shein is making its long-awaited stock market debut in Hong Kong this Tuesday. Discover its initial valuation and why it's lower than expected.
Fast fashion titan Shein is finally making its grand entrance onto the stock market, with its highly anticipated debut on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange slated for this Tuesday. Investors are eagerly awaiting to see the initial valuation of the online retail giant, known globally for its incredibly affordable clothing.
The company's flotation could value it at as much as 27 billion US dollars (£19.8 billion).
However, this figure is a significant drop from earlier expectations.
Previous valuations after a private fundraising round in 2022 reportedly pegged Shein at over 100 billion US dollars (£73.3 billion).
This lower current valuation comes amid various pressures, including recent tax changes and a general weakening of consumer sentiment in the market.
In a pricing document released last week, Shein indicated a valuation range between 202 billion HK dollars (26 billion US dollars/£18.9 billion) and 210 billion HK dollars (27 billion US dollars/£19.6 billion). Reports from Reuters, citing sources close to the company, suggest that the final valuation is expected to settle around the middle of this range.
The journey to the stock market has been a long one for Shein, which has been planning its float since 2023. Previous attempts to list in major financial hubs like New York and London faced significant hurdles due to political and regulatory scrutiny. The decision to list in Hong Kong marks a new chapter for the company.
For its upcoming September 1 listing, the group announced it would sell 280 million shares.
The share price is set between 47.60 HK dollars (£4.44) and 49.50 HK dollars (£4.62). This flotation effort is projected to raise a substantial amount, up to 14 billion HK dollars (1.8 billion US dollars), which will undoubtedly fuel the company's continued global expansion and operational improvements.
