OpenAI robotics chief resigns over Pentagon deal, says it was about principle
Robotics manager Caitlin Kalinowski resigns amid OpenAI's defense contract with the Pentagon, citing governance and ethical concerns.
Caitlin Kalinowski, a senior manager on OpenAI's robotics hardware team, announced her resignation on Saturday, signaling a principled stance against the Pentagon deal to deploy AI tech for military and domestic surveillance. She said, "This was about principle, not people," and noted she has cared deeply about "the Robotics team and the work we built together."
Kalinowski stressed that the announcement felt rushed and lacked guardrails. "To be clear, my issue is that the announcement was rushed without the guardrails defined," she wrote, adding, "These are too important for deals or announcements to be rushed."
OpenAI later signaled it would modify the contract so its models would not be used for "domestic surveillance of US persons and nationals," in an attempt to address governance concerns amid criticism that the deal gave too much power to military officials. This move comes as a broader debate about AI's role in defense grows louder, with industry watchers asking how oversight should be structured when technology crosses from civilian to military or surveillance applications.
The resignation underscores ongoing tensions around governance and speed in AI partnerships with government entities. Kalinowski, who previously worked at Meta on augmented reality glasses, has framed her exit as a stand on governance and guardrails, not as a personal dispute. Her departure adds to a narrative about how single decisions in high-stakes AI development can ripple through teams and a company’s public image, especially as defense implications come to the fore.
Meanwhile, industry dynamics continue to evolve as other firms weigh their positions on military use of AI. The controversy highlights the need for robust governance frameworks that can reassure employees, regulators, and the public about how AI technologies are deployed in sensitive contexts.
