India is gearing up for the second phase of its ambitious Census 2027, known as Population Enumeration. The Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India (RG&CCI) recently unveiled a set of 40 questions that will be used to collect vital demographic data. This phase is a crucial part of the nationwide exercise, which spans over 11 months.
A significant update for Census 2027 is the inclusion of 13 new data fields that were not part of the Census 2011 questionnaire. While specific details on all 13 are yet to be fully highlighted, the focus on "caste" recording is drawing particular attention, reflecting its importance in socio-economic profiling.
This new set of questions aims to provide a more comprehensive snapshot of the nation's population.
The Census process is divided into two main phases. The first, the Housing and House Listing Operations (HLO), is currently underway and is slated to conclude by September 30 across most of the country. However, some states, including West Bengal, Assam, Manipur, Tripura, and Tamil Nadu, are still in the process of completing their HLO phase.
Once the HLO phase is wrapped up, the Population Enumeration phase will commence, diving deeper into individual household data.
