Bengaluru's food establishments, particularly those within government premises, are under intense scrutiny following recent inspections by the Karnataka Health Department's Food Safety Division. The inspections, which resumed on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, uncovered a disturbing array of hygiene violations, expired food items, and pest infestations, leaving authorities to issue stern warnings and initiate legal proceedings.
One of the most alarming discoveries was made at the restaurant operating within the Legislators’ House, adjacent to the Vidhana Soudha. Officials reportedly found unhygienic conditions, including the presence of cockroaches in the kitchen. An advisory notice was promptly issued to the private operator managing the establishment.
The inspection team also targeted the canteen at the Health Department's own headquarters in Arogya Soudha on Magadi Road. Here, expired food products like idli rava and coconut powder were seized. Officials noted that food storage did not adhere to FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) guidelines, and a significant lack of pest control measures had created an unhygienic environment. The department has since issued an advisory notice and stated that legal proceedings will be initiated against the establishment.
Further investigations included a Nandini parlour on the premises, which was cited for labelling violations. Four other hotels located within government buildings were also inspected, revealing various deficiencies and prompting advisory notices. One establishment in the MS Building was found to be so unhygienic that it was subsequently ordered to close.
These widespread violations highlight a critical need for stricter adherence to food safety and hygiene standards across the city, especially in places catering to government officials and the general public alike. The Karnataka Health Department has formed 30 special teams to continue these inspections across hotels, restaurants, and food outlets throughout Bengaluru, aiming to safeguard public health and ensure compliance with food safety regulations.
