The World Health Organization (WHO) has categorized the risk within the DRC as very high, though the global risk currently remains low.
Adding to the medical crisis, health workers are facing significant danger from local violence. Recent reports indicate that arsonists have targeted Ebola treatment centers, causing chaos and fear. In one tragic incident, a treatment tent was set on fire, leading to 18 suspected patients going missing. Experts suggest this violence stems from deep-rooted skepticism and anger toward authorities, fueled by years of conflict and strict burial protocols that clash with local traditions.
In response to the escalating situation, India has issued an urgent travel advisory. Citizens are being urged to avoid non-essential travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan. This decision comes as Uganda documents new cases of the Bundibugyo strain, with the total death toll from this specific strain rising to 216.
