Kerala HC Stay on Rahul Mamkootathil Arrest Sparks Political Debate

The Kerala High Court has granted interim protection from arrest to MLA Rahul Mamkootathil in connection with a rape case, delaying police action until his anticipatory bail plea is heard on December 15. The court’s order means he cannot be arrested until the hearing, even as investigators press ahead with their inquiries.
Speaking at the Vote Vibe – 2025 event organized by the Thrissur Press Club, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan defended the arrest process as a routine judicial procedure, saying that the stay by the High Court is a normal part of the system when bail pleas are pending. He also asserted that the police could not locate Rahul and argued that the Congress has provided him refuge, knowing his whereabouts and even aiding his movement beyond Kerala, including to Karnataka.
Vijayan further claimed that Jamaat-e-Islami has influenced the United Democratic Front’s politics, pointing to historical ties and voting patterns to suggest the party’s role in the alliance. The opposition has framed the case as a test of political protection, with some leaders alleging that the state government is delaying the arrest for strategic reasons.
The court’s decision to grant interim protection until the December 15 hearing keeps the case in a state of anticipation, as prosecutors prepare for the bail arguments and the public watches how political forces shape the narrative surrounding the allegations and the legal process. The situation has become a focal point for Kerala politics, particularly in Thrissur and beyond, as both sides seek to assert their positions ahead of any potential electoral implications.
