West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has raised alarms over AI-driven errors in the electoral roll revision and the system known as SIR, saying electors are being forced to re-establish their identity even after corrections. In a series of letters to the Chief Election Commissioner, she pressed for checks and hearings as glitches spread across the voter list.
Her latest notes reiterate concerns that AI tools are misclassifying genuine voters as 'logical discrepancies' and delaying or complicating the re-verification process. She referenced that many voters are facing new hurdles just to confirm their identity, undermining trust in the revision exercise.
The Chief Minister also condemned the harassment of eminent citizens, pointing to cases involving Nobel laureate Amartya Sen and poet Joy Goswami among others, and urged the electoral body to ensure a fair and dignified process.
As hearings are sought, critics say the debate over SIR flaws and AI-driven checks underscores the need for transparent safeguards in the electoral update. Officials have yet to respond publicly, but Banerjee's letters keep the pressure on the CEC ahead of broader electoral reforms.
