BJP claims a sharp rise in minority votes in Telangana's municipal polls, alleging conspiracies and highlighting key wins as SIR revisions loom.
The Telangana unit of the BJP has raised alarm over what it calls an alarming rise in minority voting in the ongoing municipal polls, and questioned how minority influence seems to be growing even as the Majlis Party’s numbers dip. In Nirmal, party president N. Ramchander Rao claimed minority votes increased to an unprecedented level in a single ward, saying, “We have doubts about this and have filed a complaint. How did minority votes jump from 20% to 57%? Conspiracies are being planned to block the BJP.” He also alleged that the Majlis Party, Congress, BRS and Communists have joined forces to block the BJP from winning mayoral and chairperson posts across several urban bodies, and urged citizens and officers to stay alert during the upcoming Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in April. “Without the homeowner’s knowledge, up to 60 votes are being registered from a single house,” he claimed. The party’s supporters thanked the electorate for their backing, arguing that the BJP’s vote share rose even as the number of municipalities won was lower. For the first time in history, the BJP captured the Mayor’s seat in Karimnagar and won 28 divisions in Nizamabad, emerging as the single largest party. It also secured chairperson posts in Narayanpet and Bhainsa, and claimed a majority in 13 other local bodies, demonstrating its growing strength in areas such as Khammam, Warangal, Kothagudem and Parkal. Rao asserted the party’s expanded footprint across Telangana and signaled a push to cleanse electoral rolls ahead of the SIR revision, insisting the public must remain vigilant why reforms are needed and how future votes will be scrutinized.
