Supreme Court clears animated film "Mahaprabhu Jagannath" for release after Rath Yatra, asserting fiction can't diminish faith. A win for creative freedom & cultural storytelling!
The Supreme Court has delivered a landmark decision, allowing the release of the animated film "Mahaprabhu Jagannath" on or after July 28, 2026. This ruling comes as a significant victory for creative expression, overturning an earlier ban imposed by the Orissa High Court. The film's exhibition was initially stalled due to concerns about its strict adherence to ancient scriptures like the Skanda Purana and Brahma Purana.
A Division Bench, led by Justice B.V. Nagarathna, took a "middle path," stating emphatically that animated fiction cannot diminish genuine piety. "Devotion is something internal for everyone. Can an animated film bring down devotion? How can fiction be in accordance with the Skanda Purana and the Brahma Purana… It is only imagination at work," Justice Nagarathna remarked, addressing the Odisha government and trustees of the Lord Jagannath Temple in Puri who had objected to the film.
The apex court's decision ensures that the film, Odisha’s first animated feature, will hit screens shortly after the conclusion of the ongoing Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra, which is set to end on July 27, 2026. This strategic timing acknowledges the cultural significance of the Rath Yatra while upholding artistic freedom.
The appeal was filed by Ele Animations, the film's makers, after the Orissa High Court halted its release, even though the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had already given it the green light. Senior advocate Devadatt Kamat, representing the filmmakers, argued that the movie's primary intent was to instill devotion in children. He explained that the fictional format was chosen to make the divine origins and stories of the deity "palatable" and accessible to young minds, focusing on a child character named Balram.
Kamat drew parallels to other successful animated works like "Bal Ganesh" and "Bal Hanuman," highlighting that the film is an adaptation of a TV series that has garnered over 100 crore views on YouTube. The ban had caused considerable economic losses to the production, a point likely considered by the Supreme Court in its final deliberation. This ruling marks a crucial precedent for how traditional narratives are interpreted and presented in contemporary, artistic forms.
