India safe from fuel crunch: 60 days petrol/diesel stocks, no rationing
Ample fuel stocks and no rationing amid West Asia tensions; 60 days petrol/diesel and 45 days LPG reserves reassure households.
India is weathering global fuel disruptions with ample stocks of petrol, diesel and LPG, says Petroleum Secretary Neeraj Mittal. He announced that the country is maintaining about 60 days’ worth of petrol and diesel and roughly 45 days of LPG for households, kept on an ongoing basis since the West Asia war began. Mittal stressed that while several nations have moved to rationing, India has not and there is no plan to do so. Citizens are urged not to panic as supplies remain steady heading into the coming weeks.
Speaking at the Confederation of Indian Industry’s Annual Business Summit 2026 in New Delhi, Mittal noted the importance of conserving fuels to protect foreign exchange reserves, a concern that has intensified with higher global oil prices. He reminded the audience that India imports around 90% of its crude, making the economy sensitive to price spikes. The government has asked people to use energy wisely, but reiterated that there is no current crisis in fuel availability.
Overall, the comments from Mittal come as Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged fuel conservation to protect foreign exchange reserves, highlighting the ongoing reliance on imports. The message aims to reassure consumers and businesses alike that supplies remain stable and that any policy actions would be announced clearly if needed.
