TIFF 2026 Shines: 'La Bola Negra' Wins Top Audience Prize, India's 'Angh' Secures Oscar Spot!
The Toronto International Film Festival 2026 celebrates 'La Bola Negra' with the People's Choice Award and 'Angh' with the Platform Prize, earning direct Oscar eligibility!
The 2026 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has wrapped up with significant wins for both Spanish and Indian cinema, setting the stage for an exciting 2027 Oscar race. Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi's acclaimed film, “La Bola Negra,” took home the coveted People's Choice Award, a prize often seen as a strong indicator for future Academy Award success. “La Bola Negra,” directed by the duo collectively known as Los Javis, follows the intertwined lives of three gay men across Spain in different eras.
This victory at TIFF adds to its earlier success, including a Best Director win at Cannes. The film, starring talents like Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close, finished ahead of Peter Farrelly's “I Play Rocky” and Siân Heder's “Being Heumann.” Its win at TIFF comes as Spain has already selected it as its official submission for Best International Feature Film at the 2027 Oscars, making its journey even more promising.
Meanwhile, Indian filmmaker Theja Rio's Nagaland-set film, “Angh,” made a significant splash by winning the festival's juried Platform Prize.
This win is particularly momentous as, under new Academy rules, it grants “Angh” direct eligibility for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2027 Oscars.
This means the film, which explores profound changes within a community near the Indo-Burma border, will bypass India's traditional selection process and head straight into the Oscar contention. The Platform jury lauded “Angh” for its “refreshing perspective” and “deeply resonant portrait of a world,” also praising Rio's “vision, audacity and courage,” awarding the film a $20,000 CAD prize.
This marks a new era for non-English language films at TIFF, with the Platform Prize now offering a direct route to the Oscars.
While “Angh” makes its independent run, India has also separately submitted Santosh Davakhar's Marathi film “Gondhal” as its national entry.
Other notable winners at TIFF 2026 included Simon Stone's “Elsinore” for the International People's Choice Award, Barry Avrich's “Darlene Love: I Know Where I've Been” for the documentary audience award, and Matthew Rankin's “Ladies and Gentlemen, Brian Mulroney.” These awards highlight a diverse and vibrant year for cinema, promising a thrilling awards season ahead.
