London braces for weekend rallies near US and Iranian embassies
Protests unfold across central London this weekend, with marches near the US and Iranian embassies and a Gloucestershire demo, as police enforce routes and time limits.
London is braced for a weekend of demonstrations after tensions over the Middle East. A Stage for Freedom demonstration is scheduled to start from Whitehall and march to Kensington Road, near the Iranian embassy in Knightsbridge, with protesters expected to finish late afternoon.
Concurrently, a separate march involving groups such as the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, the Stop the War Coalition, and the Palestine Solidarity Campaign will converge on the United States embassy, starting from Millbank, calling for an end to attacks on Iran.
Metropolitan Police officials say protesters must follow designated routes and the post-march rallies must end by 5pm, with amplified music or speeches banned to limit disturbance.
Beyond London, a Gloucestershire protest is set to take place at RAF Fairford from 1pm, organized by CND to oppose any use of the base by US bombers. This follows a decision by Sir Keir Starmer permitting UK bases, including the joint UK-US Diego Garcia site in the Chagos Islands and RAF Fairford, to be used for US defensive strikes targeting countries threatened by Tehran. Gloucestershire Constabulary says it will deploy officers to keep people safe and minimize disruption.
The weekend actions occur amid broader political debate over foreign policy and defence basing, giving protesters and counter-protesters a high-profile platform as security and safety concerns rise in central London.
