The Supreme Court has sternly questioned the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) over its decision to not grant a one-time exemption to Class 6 students from the implementation of the three-language policy for the current academic year. The top court expressed its displeasure, highlighting the potential disruption and burden on young students.
The three-language policy, a key component of India's education system, mandates students to learn three languages, typically English, Hindi, and a regional language. While the policy aims to promote linguistic diversity, its sudden enforcement for Class 6 this year has raised concerns about readiness and implementation.
CBSE, however, has stood firm on its decision, opposing any exemption for the current batch of Class 6 students.
This stance prompted the Supreme Court to intervene, suggesting that the board consider a more gradual and future-oriented approach to the policy's full implementation.
During recent proceedings, the Supreme Court suggested that CBSE should perhaps roll out the three-language policy for Class 6 from the academic year 2027 onwards, giving schools and students ample time to prepare. A law officer representing CBSE indicated that the board would consider this suggestion and present a revised plan to the court.
This development signals a potential shift in the timeline for the policy's application, offering relief to many stakeholders concerned about the immediate impact on students.
