🚨 SC Nixes Bail for Abhishek Banerjee's Aide in Land Grab Scandal!

In a significant legal development on Thursday, September 10, 2026, the Supreme Court refused to grant anticipatory bail to Sumit Roy, personal assistant to prominent TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee. This decision comes in connection with the high-profile Salboni land grab case, effectively upholding an August order from the Calcutta High Court.

The Supreme Court's three-judge Bench, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, deemed that Mr. Roy's responses during interrogation had been evasive. The West Bengal government, represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, strongly argued that custodial interrogation was essential to further the ongoing investigation into the alleged land scam.

The case itself is fraught with serious charges, registered under various penal provisions including cheating, criminal breach of trust, forgery, use of forged documents, and criminal conspiracy. Mr.

Mehta, on behalf of the state, alleged that a substantial amount, approximately ₹15 crore, had been deposited by Mr.

Roy through multiple transactions.

However, Mr. Roy's defense, led by senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, vehemently countered these claims. Sankaranarayanan asserted that there was "not a single shred of proof" directly linking his client to the case.

He highlighted that Mr. Roy had already undergone approximately 88 hours of questioning without being confronted with documents or witnesses directly connecting him to the alleged financial dealings. The defense also suggested that the investigating agency was attempting to erroneously link the banking transactions of the TMC party with Mr.

Roy's personal bank account. Furthermore, it was pointed out that other accused individuals had also denied Mr. Roy's involvement during their own interrogations.

Despite the arguments presented by the defense, the Supreme Court remained unconvinced, clearing the path for further investigative action.

Following the apex court's decision, Sumit Roy was subsequently detained by the Bengal CID, marking a critical turn in the Salboni land grab investigation. This development underscores the intensifying scrutiny surrounding the alleged scam and its political implications.
