Tiger vs. Dogs: Shiv Sena Factions Battle with Biting Metaphors

The political battle within Maharashtra's Shiv Sena has taken a dramatic turn, characterized by sharp metaphors and accusations as the Uddhav Thackeray-led (UBT) faction and the Eknath Shinde camp continue their bitter feud. The iconic 'tiger,' long associated with Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray and the party's symbol, remains central to the narrative, but now it's pitted against what some are calling 'canine digs' referencing loyalty and defection.

The 'tiger' metaphor has a deep history in this political drama. Earlier, during a 'Operation Tiger' scare when the Shinde camp claimed several UBT MPs were in touch, UBT Lok Sabha leader Arvind Sawant famously declared, “Tiger zinda hai” (The tiger is alive), a nod to a popular Salman Khan movie. However, with recent developments, including the alleged rebellion of six UBT MPs, Sawant's tone has shifted, questioning who the 'tiger' truly is and dismissing media hype. Uddhav's son, Aaditya Thackeray, didn't shy away from strong words, calling the rebel MPs “shameless, ungrateful, and corrupt individuals” who are now betraying those who helped them win in 2024.

The Shinde camp, on the other hand, justifies its stance by pointing to remarks made by Sanjay Raut, which they interpret as regional parties merging with the Congress. They argue that their rebellion, which began in June 2022 from Guwahati under the hashtag #HindutvaForever, was to uphold the ideals of Hindutva and Balasaheb Thackeray, which they felt were compromised by the “unnatural” alliance with the NCP and Congress. Uddhav Thackeray vehemently rejected any notion of merging with other parties during the Shiv Sena’s foundation day event, reiterating that the party was founded to fight for Marathi people's rights and protect Hindutva, not to merge with anyone.

The latest chapter in this ongoing crisis involves six UBT Sena MPs reportedly skipping a crucial party meeting, fueling speculation of further defections. Sanjay Raut, a prominent UBT leader, claimed that there was disagreement among these dissident MPs regarding who among them would be elevated to a Union ministerial position. Meanwhile, Uddhav Thackeray has challenged the rebels, stating that he would step down if they don't trust him, but also demanded they apologize for their defection, framing the current political climate as a move towards ‘one party, no election.’ The escalating war of words and actions suggests that the Shiv Sena saga is far from over, with both factions digging in for a protracted battle over legacy, ideology, and power.
