Jammu and Kashmir's political landscape is abuzz with planned protests as the National Conference (NC), backed by the Congress party, prepares for a significant demonstration in New Delhi on Monday. The sit-in at Jantar Mantar aims to press demands for Statehood and constitutional guarantees for the region.
However, this political maneuver has sparked diverse reactions and counter-strategies. The J&K Peoples Conference (JKPC) chief, Sajad Lone, and J&K Apni Party (JKAP) chief, Altaf Bukhari, have both announced they will not join the NC's protest. Lone has openly questioned the timing and motives behind the planned demonstration, suggesting that bypassing the legislative assembly undermines democratic processes.
Lone emphasized that major political decisions require consensus, not unilateral calls to the street. He pointed out that the J&K Assembly remains the constitutional voice of the people, expressing dismay that no Statehood resolution had been passed in nearly two years, despite his attempts. He suggested that the government should have called an emergency session of the Assembly, passed a resolution, and then sent an all-party delegation to meet central leaders, rather than resorting to public protests.
According to Lone, taking the issue directly to Delhi risks reducing the Statehood question to a political battle between national parties, thereby stripping the people of Jammu and Kashmir of any real role in their own cause. He also accused the NC of inconsistency, recalling their past actions of presenting shawls to central leaders even before election results were finalized.
Adding another layer to the already complex political scenario, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its own plans for a 'secretariat gherao', a form of protest involving encircling a government building, in Jammu and Kashmir. This protest is reportedly aimed at the current government's alleged corruption, indicating a widening gap between the various political factions in the region.
