Gold & Silver Prices Steady Today (Aug 23)! What's Driving the Market?

Gold and silver prices remained largely stable on August 23, despite a general weakness observed in international bullion markets that put some downward pressure on domestic rates. Investors and consumers are keenly watching these trends, especially as global economic data and US interest rate expectations continue to influence precious metal valuations.

On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold futures saw a modest increase of 0.60%, trading at approximately ₹1.45 lakh per 10 grams. Silver futures also experienced an uptick, rising by around 0.99% to reach ₹2.23 lakh per kilogram. These figures indicate a resilient domestic market sentiment amidst global fluctuations.

For retail consumers, gold is primarily traded in two purities: 24-karat and 22-karat. While 24-karat gold is celebrated for its purest form, 22-karat gold remains a popular choice for jewellery due to its enhanced strength and durability, attributed to the presence of alloyed metals. Leading jewellers like Joyalukkas and Malabar Gold & Diamonds reported stable rates, with 22K gold at approximately ₹13,220 per gram across major Indian states, and Tanishq slightly higher at ₹13,265 per gram for 22K.

Across major Indian cities, 24K gold prices hovered around ₹1,60,000 per 10gm, while 22K gold was around ₹1,47,000 per 10gm. Silver rates also showed slight variations, with prices per kilogram generally ranging from ₹2,72,100 to ₹2,81,100. Market participants will continue to monitor global economic indicators, US interest rate decisions, and currency movements as these factors are crucial in determining the future direction of precious metal prices.
