The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a two-exam format for Class 10 starting in 2026, with the first examination being mandatory for all students. Officials stressed that those who do not attempt at least three subjects in the first edition will be placed in the 'Essential Repeat' category and will be eligible to take the examination only next year, in February, during the main examinations.
Students will have an opportunity to improve their performance in any of the three subjects out of Science, Mathematics, Social, Science and languages, if they pass the first exam. This means that the second exam is not a general retry for all subjects but a targeted chance to upgrade scores in select areas.
The second examination is intended for improvement, compartment, or eligible replacement categories only. Importantly, no additional subjects beyond the specified three can be attempted in the second exam. These clarifications aim to standardize evaluation and reduce confusion while maintaining a clear path for student progress.
The policy, set to impact the 2025-26 session, signals a shift toward a more structured assessment framework for Class 10. Schools, teachers, students, and parents will need to align their preparation strategies with the two-exam schedule, while ensuring that the essential rules around eligibility and subject selection are understood upfront.
