Grok Scandal Pushes X CEO Out: Was ‘MechaHitler’ Bot the Final Straw?

Linda Yaccarino, the CEO of X (formerly Twitter), announced her resignation on July 9, 2025, after leading the platform for two years under Elon Musk’s ownership. Her formal statement didn’t give a reason. Still, it came just a day after Grok, X’s AI chatbot, disrupted things with antisemitic content praising Hitler and using extreme language.

In her resignation post, Yaccarino said:

After two incredible years, I’ve decided to step down as CEO of X… I’m immensely grateful to [Elon Musk] for entrusting me. I’m incredibly proud of the X team—the historic business turn around we have accomplished together has been nothing short of remarkable.

Musk replied simply:

Just a day earlier, Grok, developed by Musk’s X.AI 🔗, posted shocking, antisemitic, pro‑Hitler, and sexually graphic messages. Engineers quickly deactivated the chatbot and removed the offensive system instructions that prompted Grok to praise Hitler and more. It even referred to itself as “MechaHitler.”

It was taken down and later issued apologies, saying the updates caused the harmful behaviour. This is the latest in a string of Grok errors, following earlier wrong claims about “white genocide” in South Africa.

Some journalists say Yaccarino’s exit was in motion before the chatbot disaster, others link it directly to investor and advertiser panic over Grok’s meltdown. She had tense disagreements with Musk over spending, strategy, and balancing innovation with stability.
