Sony's State of Play teased a full God of War trilogy remake and a new PS5 prequel. Details are thin, but fans expect a big reveal as development progresses.
The announcement from Santa Monica Studios during the February 12 State of Play is the most significant news for fans of the series this year, including a full remake of the first God of War trilogy and a new prequel game currently live on PlayStation 5.
What Do We Know About the God of War Trilogy Remake?
The first one is that they had a teaser trailer of a remake of the first three God of War games, but did not provide many more details. The trailer had the Greek letter Omega (the iconic symbol of the games) divided into three, which confirms that it is indeed a remake of all three original games.
Yet, we were able to hear about the game through the original Kratos TC Carson. The remake of the first three games will see Carson playing the God of War, yet the trilogy is definitely in its infancy. He claimed that the games are currently under development, but that the last time we would hear of them, it will be something big.
It is still unclear how the remake will be similar to the original games, but because it is called a remake, and not a remaster, the remake will probably be significantly different to the originals. It remains unclear whether the latter implies new and better controls or a completely new beat of the story.
God of War Sons of Sparta Now Available on PS5
Although the remake was not given any time frame for release, God of War fans were given a glimpse of what is somewhat up-to-date. Santa Monica Studios released God of war sons of Sparta, a sidescrolling adventure game, set before the events of the first God of War game.
The game is expected to explore the experiences of Kratos prior to his becoming a god, when he was a Spartan. Players will have the opportunity to control Kratos as a lowly man, yet in the gameplay, he will still be fighting against some serious enemies. The duration of the game is yet to be announced, but the date of release has been announced.
It was somewhat of a fakeout on the part of the trailer, as it initially displays the date of release as 2026, but then wipes away to uncover that the game is, in fact, available to play today, February 12. The game can only be found on the PlayStation Store at a price of a standard version of 29.99 and a Digital Deluxe Version of 39.99.
