Tragic School Shooting in Tumbler Ridge Leaves Dozens Injured, Eight Dead
A school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, BC, left eight dead, including the shooter, and more than 25 injured as RCMP investigate the motive.
Eight people were killed in a school shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia, including the shooter, with more than 25 others injured, authorities said on Tuesday. The attack unfolded at a Grades 7 to 12 campus in a town of about 2,400 people, located north of Vancouver near the Alberta border. Several victims were airlifted to hospitals with serious injuries as responders rushed to the scene.
Two additional people were found dead at a nearby residence believed to be connected to the incident, RCMP officials said, and the individual suspected to be the shooter was also found deceased with what appears to be a self-inflicted injury. Investigators are still piecing together how the victims are connected to the suspect and what motivated the attack.
In the immediate aftermath, the Peace River South School District put lockdown and secure-and-hold measures in place at both the secondary school and the nearby elementary school. RCMP declined to release the shooter’s name or motive as they continued the probe. The tragedy marks one of Canada’s deadliest school incidents in recent memory, renewing discussions about gun violence and safety in Canadian schools.
