India joined a broad international chorus condemning Israel's plans to expand settlements in the West Bank. A day earlier, New Delhi had skipped a joint appearance at the United Nations, but late on Wednesday night it added its name to a statement read by the Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour in New York. The document, endorsed by 85 countries, criticised moves to alter the status of territories under the Palestinian Authority and urged respect for international law and the Palestinian population. More than 100 states and international organizations joined in condemning unilateral measures and annexation, underscoring the global concern over demographic and territorial changes in the region.
The shift is notable because India has historically supported a Palestinian state and has criticised settlement policies. The timing appears linked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming travel to Israel on Feb. 25-26 and his meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. After initial hesitation, India's name was included in the statement, signaling a more flexible foreign policy while emphasizing opposition to unilateral measures.
The statement highlighted cooperation from a wide multinational coalition, including BRICS members, Quad partners Japan and Australia, EU member states, and all permanent UNSC members except the United States. The Palestinian government welcomed the move, saying it adds to the international chorus calling for restraint and adherence to international law. Delhi framed the language as upholding international law and the prospects for peace and stability in the region.
Analysts say the development reflects India's balancing act in the Middle East, trying to preserve strategic ties with Israel and Arab states while sticking to its traditional position in support of a Palestinian state.
