India’s Most Powerful Freight Engine: WAG‑12B Redefines Rail Transport

Indian Railways has unveiled its most powerful freight locomotive, the WAG‑12B, built by Alstom at Madhepura, Bihar. This twin‑section electric engine produces 12,000 horsepower (9 MW), making it the backbone of India’s freight modernization.

The WAG‑12B is designed for heavy haul operations, capable of pulling 6,000+ tonnes at 120 km/h. Its Bo‑Bo+Bo‑Bo configuration ensures stability and efficiency. Equipped with six asynchronous traction motors, regenerative braking, and advanced cooling systems, it sets new benchmarks in reliability.

Economically, the locomotive reduces dependence on diesel, cutting costs and emissions. It supports India’s Dedicated Freight Corridors, ensuring faster movement of coal, steel, and containers. With an axle load of 22.5–25 tonnes, it maximizes freight capacity while lowering operational expenses.

The project is part of a ₹20,000 crore contract for 800 locomotives, reinforcing India’s Make in India initiative. Over 500 units have already been delivered, creating jobs and strengthening domestic manufacturing.

Strategically, the WAG‑12B positions Indian Railways alongside global leaders in freight technology. It blends French engineering expertise with Indian production, proving India can build world‑class locomotives at scale.
