Maharashtra Tribal Students End 17-Day Hunger Strike! Demands Met!

After a determined 17-day hunger strike, tribal students in Maharashtra have achieved a significant victory, with the state government agreeing to their key demands. The protest, which garnered widespread attention, officially concluded after Tribal Development Minister Ashok Uike provided written assurances to the student representatives on Saturday.

The students' core grievances centered around several critical issues. A major demand was prompt action against individuals who allegedly secured government jobs using fraudulent Scheduled Tribe certificates.

Student leader Saurabh Bande claimed that over 12,500 such positions had been illegally obtained.

The students highlighted that many of these employees, recruited as recently as 2018 and 2019, had failed to submit their mandatory caste validity certificates within the six-month deadline. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has now assured the students that the government will meticulously collect data on these cases and take swift, decisive action against the culprits.

Another crucial demand involved improving the conditions of residential schools for tribal children. While this and other immediate concerns were addressed, the students' call for a central hostel was also promised to be resolved within a month. Minister Uike confirmed a positive discussion with CM Fadnavis, stating, "These are children of a society with a rich culture and glorious history.

The CM reacted favourably to the demands."

The student movement received vital support from various political figures, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during his Pune visit, and NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar. Student representatives specifically thanked them and the National Students Union of India, acknowledging their role in bringing media attention to their cause, which ultimately pressured the government to concede to their just demands.
