Australia Bans AI Music from Charts! Human Artistry Prevails 🎶

Australia's official music charts, run by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), have made a landmark decision, banning purely AI-generated music from chart eligibility. This move, aimed at promoting and protecting "the human nature of artistry," states that for a song to qualify, humans must have written it, performed the lead vocal, and played the primary instruments.

The new rules still permit artists to use AI tools during the production process for tasks like mastering, or even traditional tools such as drum machines and auto-tune. However, the core creative work must originate from human artists.

ARIA emphasized that it is

not interested in promoting or celebrating the success of AI-generated music that does not contain human artistry,

acknowledging that Australian artists are already competing in an increasingly crowded global market. This significant policy change follows a recent controversy involving Australian DJ Josh Fawaz, whose AI-assisted cover of Madonna's "Like A Prayer" soared on the charts, reaching number one on the ARIA dance singles chart and peaking at number two overall.

The track amassed over 48 million streams on Spotify, sparking debate before Fawaz retroactively added generative AI credits. Under the updated guidelines, artists will now be required to disclose any AI use when submitting their songs for chart consideration. ARIA also reserves the right to retrospectively adjust chart positions if it's discovered that a track was largely AI-generated.

This includes the potential demand for the return of awards for number-one hits.

Artists and their representatives will have avenues to challenge exclusions.

ARIA Chief Executive Annabelle Herd stated that these changes are designed to balance technological advancements with the fundamental need to safeguard human creativity within the music industry.

The organization aims to keep the charts dynamic while ensuring that human artistry remains at the heart of their celebrated success.
