Assam's CM confirms Zubeen Garg's death is a murder with multiple suspects; chargesheet slated for December 8 as investigations expand.
On the opening day of the winter session, the Chief Minister stated that Zubeen Garg’s death is being treated as a murder from the very first day and that four to five accused are charged, with seven people arrested in connection with the case. He added that the SIT probe is being conducted with full seriousness and that the chargesheet will be submitted before the court on December 8. The government had registered an FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 61, 105, and 106, indicating criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, and causing death by rash and negligent act, and investigators sensed irregularities soon after Garg’s death.
Garg, a celebrated Assamese icon, died while swimming off an island in Singapore on September 19 during a visit to perform at the North East India Festival. The investigation later added Section 103 to the charges, reinforcing the murder framing. In the assembly, the government stressed that the case is not a simple tragedy but a complex murder investigation with potential connections to broader financial dealings, and urged the opposition to place faith in the SIT process while the charge sheet is prepared.
The assembly discussion followed an adjournment motion moved by the Opposition. While the Speaker allowed the debate, the CM reiterated that a big story surrounds Garg’s death and emphasized that the prosecution aims to file the charge sheet on December 8, after which further inquiry will expand to ensure nobody can evade accountability. Garg’s passing has stirred emotions across Assam, with his peers and fans seeking truth and justice.
