AAP Wins Big in Punjab Rural Polls, Leads in Zila Parishad
AAP sweeps zila parishad in Punjab and leads in panchayat samitis as votes counted; rivals lag behind.
Punjab is watching as counting continues in local body polls, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) riding a strong wave in rural areas. In the zila parishad elections, the party has swept the boards and is also leading in the majority of panchayat samiti zones, signaling a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.
Across 347 zones of 22 zila parishads and 2,838 zones of 153 panchayat samitis, the AAP appears to have carved out a dominant position as results are declared. In the latest tallies reported so far, the AAP has secured victory in 201 zones of the zila parishad where results are known, with the Congress in second place on 60 zones, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on 39, BJP on 4, BSP on 3, and Independents on 10. The breadth of the AAP’s win signals strong support for the Mann government’s rural development agenda.
There are pockets that stand out in the early results. In Pathankot, the BJP managed to win four zones of the zila parishad, a notable exception in an otherwise wave-driven outcome for the AAP. Other districts like Hoshiarpur, Amritsar, Patiala, Tarn Taran, and Gurdaspur show the AAP taking multiple zones, underscoring rural voters’ broad shift toward the party. As counting continues, the balance in panchayat samiti zones tilts in favor of the AAP in the majority of zones, reinforcing the narrative of a rural mandate for the government.
Leaders from the AAP, including supremo Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, have framed the results as a referendum on the government’s rural development work. Kejriwal, speaking from Mohali, asserted that the results reflect the people’s stamp of approval and pushed back against accusations of high-handedness, insisting the polls were fair and free. The evolving picture in Punjab suggests that the wave is being felt not just in urban centers but across rural hinterlands as well.
Counting is still underway, and while the final composition remains to be seen, the momentum points to a pivotal moment for Punjab politics. If the trend holds, the AAP’s rural win could bolster its governing narrative in the years ahead and influence the state’s political discourse going into future elections.
