Marsh injured; Smith called up as Australia prep for Ireland opener
Mitchell Marsh's groin injury sidelines him from Australia's T20 World Cup opener against Ireland, with Travis Head captaining and Steve Smith on standby.
Mitchell Marsh will miss Australia's opening ICC Men's T20 World Cup clash with Ireland after suffering a groin injury in training. A direct blow to the groin left him in pain and unable to train, with medical scans confirming the injury. He will undergo rest and rehabilitation, and his return will depend on medical clearance and symptom resolution.
As a precaution, veteran Steve Smith has been drafted into the squad to provide cover, while Travis Head will lead the side in Marsh’s absence. Smith has not played a T20I since February but has been in good touch in the format, including a strong showing in the 2026 BBL where he amassed 299 runs in six innings at an average of 59.8 and a strike rate approaching 168.
In Colombo, Australia won the toss and chose to bat in their Group B opener against Ireland, with Head wearing the captain's armband. The squad also features Cameron Green, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Nathan Ellis, Xavier Bartlett, and Matthew Kuhnemann among others. Smith’s addition to the touring party means he remains ready to slot in if needed, offering another experienced option for a tournament that is already underway and could require leadership depth.
The injury is a blow to Australia’s leadership and balance at the start of the World Cup, but the squad’s depth and Smith’s presence as cover could help them weather the early setback as they bid to compete for the title.
