A federal judge has ordered the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts to pay over $250,000 to jazz musician Chuck Redd. This significant ruling comes after Redd canceled his scheduled appearance at the iconic arts venue in protest of a controversial decision to consider placing former President Donald Trump's name on the building.
The legal battle began when Redd, a long-time host of the annual Christmas Eve Jazz Jam at the Kennedy Center, pulled out of the event. His decision was a direct response to a vote by the Trump-appointed board members last December, which aimed to add the former president’s name to the institution. Redd reportedly viewed this potential name change as illegal.
In March 2025, the Kennedy Center sued Redd for breach of contract, arguing that the musician "chose to abuse the public forum provided to him by the Center to make a political statement, and to deprive the public of the concert he promised." However, D.C. Judge Tanya M. Jones Bosier swiftly dismissed the lawsuit later that month. Judge Bosier's ruling stated that Redd had never actually signed a contract for the holiday concert. Furthermore, she found that even if a contract existed, the Kennedy Center failed to provide sufficient evidence that Redd had breached it.
Monday's order stipulates that the Kennedy Center must pay Redd $252,479.70 to cover his attorneys’ fees and other legal expenses within 45 days. Despite the clear court decision, a spokesperson for the Kennedy Center has indicated that the institution plans to appeal the ruling.
Lisa Banks, Redd's attorney, commented on the outcome, stating, "The Trump-controlled Kennedy Center tried to silence opposition to its illegal name change by filing a meritless lawsuit against jazz musician Chuck Redd. The court rightly dismissed it." This case highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding political figures' influence on cultural institutions and artists' rights to protest.
