Erode's Samathuva Pongal Festival Unites Communities
At Erode Collectorate, the Samathuva Pongal Festival–2026 showcases Tamil harvest traditions with games, performances and prizes, uniting communities.
Erode welcomed a vibrant display of heritage as the Samathuva Pongal Festival–2026 lit up the Collectorate grounds. The celebration, focused on reaffirming Tamil harvest traditions for the younger generation, drew students, officials and local families into a shared morning of color, song and regional pride.
Collector S. Kandasamy inaugurated the festival, setting the tone for a day of traditional games and performances. Officials from multiple departments, including District Revenue Officer S. Santha Kumar and District Revenue Officer (Land) Manjula, were among those in attendance, along with Personal Assistants to the District Collector Ramkumar and Loganathan (Agriculture), Assistant Tourism Officer Palanisamy and other staff.
Participants showcased a spectrum of cultural activities: rangoli competitions, tug-of-war, uri adithal and a ‘lucky corner’ for visitors. Schoolchildren performed folk arts and martial arts such as silambam, alangara silambam and magudu veechu, while parai drums kept rhythm as thappattam artists joined the line for a lively parai session.
Evening programs included mayilattam, kaalaiyattam and mangala isai, with prizes distributed to winners of the various contests. The festival’s overarching message was clear: Pongal strengthens community bonds, honors farmers and the Sun, and passes a rich heritage to the next generation.
The Samathuva Pongal celebrations at the Collectorate reflect Tamil Nadu’s tradition of welcoming the new year with gratitude, unity and festive spirit, turning a local government venue into a microcosm of the state’s enduring cultural tapestry.
