Iran & Oman Eye Joint Strait of Hormuz Route Amid US Sanctions Threat

Oman and Iran are currently engaged in sensitive discussions regarding the establishment of a jointly managed shipping route through the vital Strait of Hormuz. This initiative comes at a time of heightened regional tension and direct opposition from the United States. These bilateral talks in Oman follow an earlier memorandum of understanding signed by Washington and Tehran on June 17.

The interim deal initially aimed to define the future administration and maritime services in Hormuz, but it quickly fell apart due to disputes over shipping lanes.

The discussions between Oman and Iran have drawn a sharp reaction from the United States.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently stated that the U.S. intends to sanction any entity conducting business with the Islamic Republic.

Adding to the pressure, former President Trump reportedly threatened to bomb Oman earlier this month, responding to news of Muscat's negotiations with Tehran on the Strait. The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial global chokepoint, with the U.S. military actively protecting ships using a southern route along Oman's coast. U.S. Central Command reports that over 660 million barrels of crude oil have transited through Hormuz under its protection since May.

Conversely, Iran insists that all vessels utilize a northern route through its territorial waters, warning of potential attacks otherwise. Recent incidents underscore the volatile nature of the region.

An oil tanker was hit by an unknown projectile near Oman just this Monday, rendering it disabled.

Last week, two cargo ships also came under attack in Hormuz, tragically resulting in the deaths of two sailors.
