A political slugfest erupted over Rahul Gandhi's recent foreign engagements as the BJP accused the Leader of Opposition of meeting people with an 'anti-India agenda' during his Berlin trip. A BJP spokesperson cited a photo of Gandhi with Berlin-based professor Cornelia Woll and claimed Woll's ties to a group funded by the Open Society Foundation as proof of an alleged anti-India conspiracy. The party pressed the line that such meetings undermine India's sovereignty and integrity. Gandhi's team has not publicly responded to the BJP's charges.
In New Delhi, Bhatia highlighted Gandhi's previous visits to Colombia and the United Kingdom as part of a supposed pattern of maligning India on foreign soil. The BJP's charge reflects a broader narrative it has pushed in recent years about foreign interlocutors influencing Indian politics from abroad.
Defence of Gandhi came from within the INDIA bloc, with Jammu & Kashmir chief minister and INDIA leader Omar Abdullah arguing that travelling abroad to talk, meet scholars, and exchange ideas is not a crime. He noted that even the Prime Minister travels internationally and suggested that objections should not be raised simply because meetings occur with people who have diverse viewpoints.
The controversy underscores a larger debate about diplomacy, media framing, and political rhetoric in India, where foreign engagements by opposition leaders are increasingly cast as either constructive diplomacy or a vulnerability to anti-India forces, depending on who is speaking.
