The Election Commission of India (EC) has once again extended the schedule for Delhi's special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. This marks the second such extension within a single month, pushing key deadlines further.
The ongoing door-to-door verification process, conducted by Booth Level Officers (BLOs), will now continue until August 17. Consequently, the much-anticipated publication of the final electoral roll has been rescheduled to October 27.
This decision comes after Delhi's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Ashok Kumar, requested additional time due to “slow progress of the enumeration process.” Initially, the distribution and collection of enumeration forms were meant to conclude by late July but were first extended to August 8, and now further.
Official data reveals that as of Tuesday, only 63.23% of the 1.45 crore enumeration forms had been digitized. While 99.199% of forms were distributed, the digitization process lagged, raising concerns about timely completion.
A senior election official explained that the remaining time was insufficient for BLOs to complete the extensive exercise accurately, including verifying all elector details. BLOs have reported difficulties in identifying absent, shifted, deceased, and duplicate voters, as well as helping residents map their details with previous rolls.
The extension is also reportedly influenced by recent directions from the Delhi High Court, emphasizing the need to ensure election-related processes are thorough and error-free. This aims to ease the “unbearable burden” on BLOs and ensure a comprehensive and accurate electoral roll for the capital.
