Police say two people have been arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire damaged a memorial wall in Golders Green, a tribute to Iran protesters and the 2023 Hamas attack victims.
A 46-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire damaged a memorial wall in Golders Green. They were arrested at an address in Romford, east London, on Monday morning and taken to a London police station where they remain in custody. Searches are being carried out at the Romford address as part of the investigation.
The memorial wall near a Jewish centre commemorates thousands of protesters killed in Iran in January and those killed during the Hamas attack at the Nova festival in Israel in 2023. A recent statement of solidarity for the Jewish community has also been attached to a nearby tree.
The arrests are part of a Counter Terrorism Policing London investigation into a series of suspected antisemitic arson attacks in north-west London. The operation has led to a broader effort, with a total of 30 arrests and nine people charged across related incidents. The inquiry also encompasses other incidents in the area, including the attack on Hatzola ambulances in Golders Green in March. Investigators say the probe continues on multiple lines of inquiry and that protective security guidance is being offered to the community.
