A devastating tragedy has struck near Gummidipoondi, Tiruvallur district, as a three-year-old girl, whose parents are migrant workers from Bihar, has died following a horrific sexual assault. The heartbreaking incident has led to the arrest of a 19-year-old man, also from Bihar, who was known to the family and worked at the same steel company as the child's parents in the SIPCOT industrial estate.
Police sources indicate that the accused often played with the young child. On Sunday night, June 14, 2026, while the girl was playing with other children on the street, the accused allegedly lured her away under the pretext of buying her chocolates. He then reportedly subjected her to a penetrative sexual assault at a secluded spot around 8 p.m.
A passerby witnessed the horrifying act and immediately alerted local residents, drawing a crowd to the scene. The accused attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended by members of the public. SIPCOT police arrived shortly after, taking him into custody and officially arresting him.
The severely injured girl was initially admitted to the government hospital at Kottakarai before being transferred to the Government Stanley Hospital for more specialized care. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries on Monday morning, June 15, despite medical efforts.
Authorities have registered a case against the accused under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, along with provisions related to murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He is currently being produced for remand as further investigations are actively underway.
This tragic event has deeply shaken the community, prompting residents of the Pudupettai area to stage a road blockade, known as a 'road roko'. Their protests are a desperate plea for enhanced safety measures for children in the locality and a demand for swift justice in this devastating case. The community also suspects potential accomplices and is calling for a thorough investigation to ensure all involved are brought to justice and similar incidents are prevented in the future.
