Losing the captain and the team’s leading red-ball batsman at a high level made the matches particularly challenging, he argued, even before factoring in the quality of the opposition. He lamented that some voices connected to cricket had commented on issues outside on-field performance, including remarks from an IPL team owner who suggested split coaching, which Gambhir described as surprising and outside his domain.
Addressing reporters after India clinched the ODI series 2-1 against South Africa, Gambhir reiterated his commitment to his role as red-ball coach. He pointed out that while not using excuses, it’s important to acknowledge the impact of missing key players on the team’s results.
