India Set to Acquire Lethal US Javelin Missiles: A Game Changer?

India is reportedly moving forward with plans to acquire the highly advanced Javelin anti-tank missile systems from the United States. This significant defense acquisition is being hailed as a major step in bolstering India's military capabilities and deepening the strategic partnership between the two nations.

US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, underscored the importance of this deal, stating it represents a "great step" in the India-US defence relationship. This move highlights the growing cooperation and trust between New Delhi and Washington on matters of national security.

The Javelin missile system is renowned globally for its effectiveness, particularly its "fire-and-forget" capability.

This feature allows soldiers to launch the missile and immediately take cover or engage other targets, as the missile autonomously guides itself to the target after launch. This greatly enhances battlefield survivability and efficiency for infantry units. Weighing approximately 11.8 kg, with its Command Launch Unit (CLU) adding another 7 kg, the complete Javelin round totals around 15.5 kg.

Its operational range is impressive, capable of striking targets from approximately 65 metres up to 4 kilometres, depending on conditions and configuration.

These specifications make the Javelin a formidable weapon against various armored threats.

The potential induction of Javelin missiles into the Indian armed forces is expected to significantly upgrade India's anti-tank warfare capabilities, providing a critical edge in potential ground engagements.
