It's a movies that takes you in a world of it own. It's a benchmark.. a well-set benchmark for movies to come. The plot is set in 1930's, the era of gangster, tommy guns, gang wars, protection rackets, night club & gambling. This isn't action packed gangsta movie; it is a real drama with FLAWLESS (and I mean it) characterizations and casting in a beautiful screen play. The more you watch it the more you'll fall in love with it.
The movie story line is a very classic one somewhat on the lines of The Godfather.. and seems to be marginally influenced by it too. One powerful gang headed by Alber Finney (Leo), another an upcoming one lead by Jon Polito (Casper), Gabriel Byrne (Tom Reagan.. comes close to Tom Hegan the Conciliari there) is Leo's prime advisor and the wise guy, Marcia Gay Harden (Verna) is the beautiful blond who's responsible for the love triangle and her brother John Turturro (Bernie).. the smart ass prick you would love to kill.
Coen Brother in a very subtle manner have added the dimension of hat which is very central to the film. Its upto an individual to decide what they would relate to it. The lingo used is very cool and classy... I guess its been slightly boosted with some new words like "Schmada" and "Twist". I'ev already watched it thrice.. an dont seem be getting bored of it. Its a must watch... for all you "Godfather" fans.
