Fire crews are making progress in their battle against a large wildfire threatening Reno, Nevada, with officials reporting the blaze is now about a quarter contained. The Hawk Fire, which ignited on Saturday, has rapidly spread across 15,000 acres by Monday, prompting widespread concern and emergency responses.
Hundreds of firefighters, supported by air tankers and helicopters, are working tirelessly to control the inferno.
Evacuation orders remain in effect for approximately 23,000 residents, particularly those in the Sierra Nevada foothills where the fire started due to windy and unpredictable weather. While some residents have been allowed to return home, tens of thousands more have been placed on standby, ready to evacuate at a moment's notice should conditions worsen.
Officials are particularly worried about forecasted gusts of wind over the next two days, which could drive the flames towards more populated areas and make containment efforts even more challenging.
The wildfire has resulted in seven injuries, including four civilians and three firefighters, all reported to have suffered minor burns. Tragically, 32 homes have been destroyed and six others damaged, numbers that Chief Richard Edwards of the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District expects to rise as assessments continue.
Shelters have been established in the region to provide refuge and assistance to displaced residents.
Despite the significant damage and disruption, no fatalities have been reported.
