BP's Boardroom Shake-Up: Ian Tyler Takes Helm After Tumultuous Ousting

BP has officially appointed Ian Tyler as its new permanent chair, aiming to bring stability to the oil and gas giant after a period of significant boardroom upheaval. Tyler, who has been serving as interim chair and a non-executive director since April 2025, steps into the role immediately. His appointment comes after a lengthy search initiated by the controversial removal of former chair Albert Manifold in May.

Manifold's departure after only eight months in the position sent shockwaves through the company.

BP cited "serious concerns" about his tenure, including "governance oversight and conduct issues" that the board found unacceptable. Reports from within the company suggested that senior colleagues felt belittled by Manifold, and he was accused of aggressive behavior, acting more like an executive than a chair.

Manifold, however, staunchly denied these claims, asserting he was fired without prior warning and disputed the reports regarding his conduct. Adding another layer to the boardroom drama, Amanda Blanc, BP's senior independent director who oversaw the search for Manifold's replacement, announced her decision to step down at next year's annual meeting.

Blanc had previously faced criticism following Manifold's short stint, as she had led the process that appointed him and had initially praised his "relentless focus on performance." Her departure further underscores the challenges BP has faced at its highest levels. The company has seen considerable leadership churn, with three chairs and three chief executives in the last five years alone.

This rapid succession highlights a period of ongoing transition and strategic re-evaluation for the energy giant.
