Anti-Reservation Protest Rocks Jantar Mantar: Demands for Quota Overhaul Amidst Detentions
Massive anti-reservation protest at Jantar Mantar! Protesters demand income-based quotas & changes to UGC rules. Police detain many as tensions rise over India's reservation policy. #ReservationHatao
Hundreds of protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Friday, August 21, 2026, under the banner of the "Reservation Hatao Andolan" (RHA), demanding a significant overhaul of India's long-standing reservation policy. Despite clear warnings from the Delhi Police that no permission had been granted for a demonstration, a large crowd amassed, leading to heightened security and several detentions.
The protesters, many mobilized by organizations representing "general" castes like Karni Sena and Ranbir Sena, advocated for a reservation system based solely on income criteria rather than the current socio-economic categories. Key demands included "one family, one reservation" and a call for the government to retract the University Grants Commission's (UGC) 2026 caste-equity rules, which had previously sparked widespread protests in January of the same year.
The "Reservation Hatao Andolan" originated from an Instagram page initiated by student Harsh Dubey. The movement gained momentum amidst calls for the resignation of then-Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Following Mr. Pradhan's resignation, Mr. Dubey stated he had transferred control of the page to veteran anti-reservation activists Anuradha Tiwari, Ajeet Bharti, and Neha Das, who are now leading the charge.
In response to the demonstration, police personnel and paramilitary forces were heavily deployed at Jantar Mantar and other key points. Visuals circulated on social media, including X, showed officers detaining protesters who had arrived with banners and posters. Authorities had also issued warnings about legal action against those disseminating false information regarding the protest.
The protest comes as the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Union government has consistently reaffirmed India's stance that reservations for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes are not merely a poverty alleviation program. Instead, they are designed to ensure the representation of marginalized communities that have historically faced social, economic, and educational disadvantages. Furthermore, on Thursday, August 20, the Union government informed the Supreme Court that it was reconsidering the 2026 UGC equity regulations, signaling a potential shift in policy that may address some of the protesters' concerns while balancing the foundational principles of the reservation system.
