CBSE Under Fire: Tech Glitches and Portal Attacks Shake Student Confidence

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is currently dealing with a series of technical headaches that have put the board exam evaluation process under the microscope. From security breaches to mix-ups in answer sheets, the transition to digital systems hasn't been as smooth as many had hoped.

One major concern involves a recent malicious attack on the CBSE portal. Reports indicate that about 50 students managed to get into the system, though the board is now working to get everything back on track. To help students who might be worried about their results, the re-evaluation portal is set to go live on June 1.

The board’s new On-Screen Marking (OSM) system is also facing questions. The contract for the system was given to a Hyderabad-based company just 74 days before the exams began. This firm won the bid by offering a much lower price—about ₹25.75 per answer sheet—while another major tech giant quoted around ₹65. Some are now wondering if the lower cost and the rush to get the system ready contributed to the problems.

So far, officials have confirmed about 20 cases where answer sheets were mixed up. While that might seem like a small number compared to the 9.8 million papers being checked, for the students involved, it’s a huge deal. Even before the exams, a test run had flagged 36 potential issues, including the fear that teachers might check papers too quickly or superficially without enough supervision.

There is some good news for the future, though. CBSE plans to make scanned answer sheets available on DigiLocker starting next year. This should make the whole process much more transparent. For now, the board is working on fixing the current glitches and making sure every student gets the marks they actually earned.
