Journey back fifty years to June 29th, when the 'String of Pearls' – Seychelles – unfurled its own flag, marking a triumphant end to centuries of colonial rule. A new chapter began for 68,000 Seychellois!
Fifty years ago today, a new star rose in the western Indian Ocean as the Seychelles, affectionately known as 'The String of Pearls,' proudly declared its independence. After centuries under French and British colonial domination, this archipelago of 92 islands officially took its rightful place among the nations of the world, ushering in a momentous new chapter for its 68,000 citizens.
The capital city of Victoria was awash with vibrant celebrations, serving as the backdrop for this historic occasion. President James R. Mancham had the honor of raising the flag of the world's youngest nation in a colorful ceremony, symbolizing a great victory for a member of the third world. Delegations from across the globe converged on picturesque Victoria to witness this significant event, demonstrating international recognition and solidarity.
India marked its presence with a distinguished delegation, including the Minister of State for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Mr. Surendra Pal Singh, and the Indian High Commissioner to Kenya, Air Chief Marshal Arjan Singh. Their participation highlighted the strong diplomatic ties and well wishes extended to the newly independent nation.
While the land area of the Seychelles archipelago is a modest 279 sq. km, its territorial stretch across the ocean covers an expansive 388,000 sq. km. Despite its proximity to the equator, the islands boast an equable climate, making them a true paradise. Though known to seafarers as early as 916 AD, the islands remained uninhabited for centuries before the establishment of the first French colony in 1770. This period ignited Anglo-French rivalry in the Indian Ocean, culminating in no fewer than seven capitulations to the British. French rule finally ceased in 1814, integrating Seychelles as a dependency of the British colony of Mauritius until its ultimate liberation fifty years ago.
