Wyndham Clark has clinched the BMW Championship title in a thrilling finish in St Louis, fending off a remarkable final-round charge from Rory McIlroy. Clark, who started the day as the overnight leader, held his nerve to secure his third PGA Tour title of the season, further solidifying his position in the FedExCup Rankings. Rory McIlroy, a two-time Masters champion, began the final round a challenging five shots behind Clark.
Displaying his characteristic resilience and skill, McIlroy mounted an incredible comeback, battling shot for shot and managing to draw level with Clark after 15 holes, setting the stage for a nail-biting conclusion at Bellerive Country Club. However, the momentum shifted decisively in the final stretch. McIlroy's challenge ultimately ended with a bogey six on the 17th hole.
In contrast, Clark maintained his composure under immense pressure, delivering a superb performance on the closing holes. He birdied the 16th with a crucial 16-foot putt, then followed up with birdies on the 17th and 18th, wresting back control of the tournament. This spectacular finish saw Clark end on 17 under par, three shots clear of Patrick Cantlay, who secured second place, with McIlroy finishing four shots adrift in third.
Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy told Sky Sports Golf, "
A big improvement on last week. I don't think I can be too disappointed, I'm probably not playing well enough to be disappointed I didn't win.
" He acknowledged his missed opportunities, adding, "I had my chances on the back nine. I started to hit some good shots.
I hit a lot of good putts that didn't go in." McIlroy was also quick to praise his opponent: "Wyndham stepped up when he needed to. The birdie on 16 was huge. The way he played the last three holes, he showed a lot of character there." McIlroy's round began with a birdie on the opening hole, capitalizing on Clark's three-putt bogey.
Despite dropping shots at the fourth and seventh, he roared back with back-to-back birdies before the turn.
Another gain at the 11th briefly put him in a tie for the lead, but a series of missed birdie putts over the next five holes, culminating in finding sand twice on the 17th, ultimately derailed his bid for the title.
Clark, who was three over for the day heading to the 16th tee, demonstrated incredible mental fortitude to close out the championship with three consecutive birdies, showcasing why he's a force to be reckoned with on the PGA Tour.
