Abhishek Sharma makes Indian cricket history with 100 sixes in a year
Abhishek Sharma becomes the first Indian to hit 100 sixes in a calendar year, powering Punjab in SMAT with a 62 off 34 against Services.
Abhishek Sharma has carved his name into T20 history by becoming the first Indian to smash 100 sixes in a calendar year, a landmark he reached during Punjab’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy clash with Services. The left-handed opener belted 62 from 34 balls, including eight fours and three sixes, and finished the innings with a brisk strike rate of 182.35. Beyond this innings, his year reads like a record book: 1,499 runs at an average of 42.82 and a strike rate of 204.22, with three centuries and nine fifties. His high score of 148 came in SMAT as well, underlining his all-round impact.
In the match, Punjab posted 233/6 in 20 overs after a 106-run partnership between Prabhsimran Singh and Sharma. Prabhsimran made 50 off 28 while Anmolpreet Singh contributed 34 off 23 and Naman Dhir a quick 54 off 22 with two fours and sixes. For Services, Abhishek Tiwari and Vikas Gaur took two wickets apiece. Punjab then defended the total, sealing a 73-run win and moving to the top of Group C with 4 wins and 2 losses from six games.
Sharma’s landmark adds another chapter to India’s prolific T20 calendar, highlighting the depth of domestic cricket that fuels the national team’s pipeline. The year’s haul underscores how a single player can dominate the shortest format, even as teams chase consistency across a busy schedule. With his unusual volume of sixes and a staggering strike rate, Sharma has drawn attention from fans and analysts alike, setting the stage for ongoing discussions about India’s selection considerations in the fast-evolving format.
As Punjab looks ahead, the 26-year-old’s form should keep him at the front of selectors’ minds as domestic tournaments continue to roll on. The journey from SMAT to bigger stages is one many aspiring cricketers chase, and Sharma’s year proves it’s possible to redefine what a makeshift year can look like in India’s white-ball revolution.
