India is enthusiastically observing the International Day of Yoga, with celebrations spanning from university campuses to significant cultural and historic sites across the nation. This year's national theme, 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing', underscores the practice's timeless relevance for well-being.
Kristu Jayanti University in Bengaluru recently hosted a special programme to commemorate the 12th International Day of Yoga. Organized by its Centre for Yoga and Wellness, and Jayantian Extension Services, in collaboration with Sri Sri School of Yoga, The Art of Living, the event brought together prominent figures including Rev. Fr. Dr. Augustine George, Vice-Chancellor of Kristu Jayanti University, and Vasanti S. Iyer, CEO and Director of Sri Sri School of Yoga.
A key highlight of the Bengaluru event was the keynote address by Vasanti Iyer, who eloquently spoke on the enduring relevance of yoga in an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and rapid technological advancements. Iyer noted that while technology has made information readily accessible, it has also contributed to rising stress levels, mental health challenges, and social isolation. Yoga, she emphasized, offers a powerful antidote, fostering mental clarity, emotional balance, and physical health, making it an essential practice in navigating the complexities of modern life.
Beyond university grounds, the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, has selected 12 cultural and historic sites across the country to host major Yoga Day events. This initiative aims to beautifully intertwine India's rich civilisational heritage with the global celebration of yoga, showcasing the practice in settings that resonate with millennia of history and culture.
Yoga, often hailed as "India's greatest export," has evolved from a 5,000-year-old science into a global wellness revolution. Its journey saw a significant surge in interest across the West in the 1960s, and it continues to gain momentum worldwide. The collective observances across India this International Day of Yoga reinforce its profound impact on mental, physical, and spiritual health, particularly in promoting healthy ageing and addressing the challenges posed by our increasingly digital world.
