Former President Donald Trump has reignited tensions in the ongoing trade dispute with Canada, vehemently defending his administration's tariff hikes by claiming America's northern neighbor 'thinks they're a state' but isn't, and therefore should not expect favorable trade terms.
The controversial remarks, made during an interview with Fox News host Trey Gowdy, saw Trump assert,
We lose all of this tremendous money. They think they're a state, but they're not a state. Why should we be subsidizing Canada?
This stance comes amid a deepening trade conflict where the Trump administration recently slapped 50 percent tariffs on a range of Canadian exports.
These tariffs were imposed after trade negotiations between the two countries reportedly collapsed.
Canadian officials, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, have responded forcefully, pledging to mirror U.S. levies 'dollar for dollar.' Ontario Premier Doug Ford also criticized Trump's aggressive actions, calling them "the worst thing you could do for the American economy" and "absolutely backwards." Ford further likened Trump's renaming stunt of Lake Ontario to "Lake America"—a move he previously applied to the Gulf of Mexico—to "something out of Saturday Night Live."
Trump's comments follow previous, often rejected, overtures he made about Canada potentially becoming the 51st state, which were largely met with anti-Trump patriotic fervor across the border. Using his Truth Social platform, Trump also demanded that all Canadian companies wishing to continue business with the U.S. immediately reshore their headquarters within U.S. borders to avoid tariffs, stating, "Many of them are Companies that moved out years ago due to stupid U.S.
Leadership. When you move back, there are no TARIFFS!" He further labeled Canada, America's second-largest trading partner, as a significant 'abuser' costing the U.S. billions annually.
