Nepali Diaspora Unites in Australia Amidst Devastating Nepal-Tibet Floods

The Nepali and Tibetan communities in Australia are rallying together to respond to the devastating flood disaster in Nepal and Tibet. As the death toll continues to climb and thousands remain missing, community members are holding vigils and initiating fundraising efforts to support recovery.

On Thursday night, mourners gathered in Sydney's Rockdale, lighting candles and holding a minute's silence for the victims. This heartfelt response comes as families in Australia desperately await news from missing relatives and friends caught in the disaster zone.

Nepali authorities reported on Friday that the death toll has tragically risen to 579, with an alarming number of over 1,900 people now listed as missing.

Massive flash floods and landslides tore through the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river basins earlier this week, causing widespread destruction.

Australia's Foreign Affairs Minister, Penny Wong, confirmed on Friday morning that the number of Australians missing in the floods had increased to 39. In response, the Australian government has announced a $5 million support package to aid relief efforts. Minister Wong also directed Australians wishing to donate to the Emergency Action Alliance website, a platform run by various Australian charities and humanitarian organizations.

Dr. Tilak Pokhrel, President of the Australian Nepalese Multicultural Centre (ANMC), stated that community organizations in Victoria are also planning to host a vigil, which will coincide with an upcoming national day of mourning to be announced by the Nepali government.

The diaspora remains united in their grief and determination to support their homeland during this "devastating" time.
